Residents of Massachusetts may register to vote in the town clerk's office during regular business hours and at Special Registration Sessions. Registration is also available at the Registry of Motor Vehicles and certain other state agencies. To register to vote an individual must be 18 years of age by the date of the next election and a United States Citizen. Registration closes twenty days prior to each election. Mail-in registration forms must be postmarked no later than the deadline date.

The polls in Dalton are open for all state and federal elections from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The polls in Dalton are open for all local elections from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.

In a primary election, voters who are registered in a political party are restricted to the ballot for the party in which they are registered. "Unenrolled voters" (commonly referred to as independent party voters) may request the ballot of any party participating in the primary election. The status of "unenrolled voters" will not change by taking a party ballot.
